Joyce carol Oates har en fantastisk förmåga att skriva en berättelse. I "dom där" får vi följa en familj under 30-60 talets USA. De är fattiga men fulla av hopp. Inte en av Oates bästa men starka karaktärer följer läsaren i en stark berättelse. En svag 4:a

Them (eller dom där) handlar om det fattiga syskonparet Maureen och Jules som växer upp i ett Detroit i uppror. Båda är fast beslutna att lämna slummen och erhålla ett bättre liv men väljer helt skilda medel för att nå dit. Genom boken får vi följa syskonens misslyckanden och framgångar, vilka beskrivs med stor intensitet, värme och närvaro. Livet för Maureen och Jules är aldrig enkelt men trots sin olyckliga lott i livet förblir de romantiker som väljer att kämpa för ett bättre öde.
