Steven Kearny, a New York writer, without luck and possibly without talent, is unable to place any of his 25 immense novels and 42 unwieldy plays. After a series of professional and personal setbacks - his girlfriend loots his modest bank account and he is knocked down by a taxi - Steven unexpectedly receives a summer position as a writer in residence at the Creedemore Colorado Historical Society, where his assignment is to create a theatrical retrospective on the 100th anniversary of this Rocky Mountain town. Hoping to replenish his creative juices while enjoying a summer holiday, he instead finds himself in the middle of a bizarre Western war over water and property rights, as cowboys and yuppies, ecological terrorists and halliucinating lawmen descend upon the town for the trial of the 92-year-old gunslinger at the centre of it.
