Även felaktiga tankar har sitt mest fulländade uttryck. Rousseau hittar några. Locke och Hobbes äger mer tyngd när de talar om samma saker. Rousseau är mer litteratör än filosof, och övertygar inte genom logisk oantastlighet utan genom sympati. Ändå är hans argument sällan uppenbart idiotiska, som de kan vara hos t.ex. Paine.
