Aktuellare än någonsin, Marsha Gessens skrämmande skildring av utvecklingen mot diktatur i Ryssland och av Putin som maktdespot. Hon har hittat källor som berättar om Putins uppväxt och väg till makten och argumenterar för att en del av det som har angetts som tetjeniska terrordåd i själva verket var iscensatta av KGB. Hennes skildring verkar trovärdig mot bakgrund av de senaste händelserna.
