Locomotive sheds have existed since locomotives were invented. They have been built in assorted shapes and sizes that varied according to each company?s requirements. From the express passenger depots to the small sub sheds that were often tucked away in a rural backwater, these places were very attractive to the railway enthusiast. Before, and especially after, the Second World War clubs and societies sprang up for the sole purpose of visiting as many of these establishments as possible. There was 600 or more locomotive depots during the steam era, though this number was greatly reduced as a result of the Modernisation Plan and the eventual elimination of standard gauge steam in 1968. This book shows an interesting variety of sheds and depots both large and small across England, Scotland and Wales from the inter-war years through to British Railways days.
