I det skogiga Oregon på amerikas västkust kämpar familjen Stamp med sitt skogsbolag. Man har dock stött på patrull när fadern skadat sig och den lokala fackföreningen sätter emot hårt. Den lokala legenden Hank skriver till sin bortklemade broder på Östkusten om hjälp. Väl tillbaka får vi dels följa kampen att klara av jobbet, men också familjedramat som går långt tillbaka i tiden.
Historien är kärv och behandlar brödernas konflikt likväl som familjens konflikt med det lokala samhället. Men allt detta är på ytan, och historien går mycket djupare än så. Stora frågor brottas det med.
Boken är fenomenal, komisk och tragisk. Magnifikt berättad. Som alla stora verk är den trög att ta sig in i, men än svårare att dra sig ur.
