En gammal man minns sin ungdom - och minns, som sådana brukar göra, att det var bättre förr. Boken är rapsodisk och vi kastas mellan tid och rum och egentligen tror jag att det vara lite sysselsättningsterapi för Saramago att skriva den. Men läs boken för språkets skull och för hans hyllning av konsten att läsa och skriva.
