Humoristisk och allvarlig. Viktig skildring som främst förstås ger en inblick i Angelous egna upplevelser men kanske också ger en ide över de mörkhyades livsvillkor och tankevärld under denna period, även om Angelou inte var representativ. Obs att allt inte är helt korrekt i de sju delarna av självbiografin. Vore intressant att veta när och hur verkligheten skiljer sig från dikten.
