Det verkade hyfsat lovande, och hans deckare i antika Rom är väl lite småputtriga. Men här blir det problematiskt. Tanken är att göra själva staden Rom till huvudperson under cirka ett årtusende från sagotid till kejsartid, men det funkar inte i Saylors fall. Det blir episodiska nedslag med 100-200 års mellanrum, och man hinner aldrig få ett tillräckligt intressant porträtt av någon av de skildrade människorna. Tvärtom blir de i Saylors fall ofta riktiga klichéer. Så ädla. Så ömma. Så ondskefulla och lömska. När därför boken både saknar intressanta karaktärer OCH en bärande medryckande story och bara är strukturerad runt en så abstrakt princip som en stads tillblivelse, faller det hela. I alla fall för mig.
