Toibin är en lysande stilist. Här får vi följa nyblivna änkan Nora under tre år. Genom att beskriva hennes handlingar under denna tid får vi ett nyanserat porträtt av vår huvudperson. När boken väl slutar blir jag rejält besviken. Det bidde en tumme! Nora var ju inte heller en särskilt rörande person. Karg, inåtvänd, ja tråkig.
