Det börjar kännas enformigt att sätta fyror på nästan alla Culture-böcker, men de är så trevliga att läsa. Matter har för all del en tillräckligt solid story, men som vanligt är den främsta behållningen att ta del av världen Banks har skapat. Bokens avslutning skulle kunna dra ned totalintrycket, det är - åter - lite deus ex machina över den, men det är å andra sidan välskrivet.
