Resepredikant kommer till avlägsen plats i söderna. Han lyckas slå klorna i en fattig man och hans kvinna. Sakta tar han över den arme satens alla ägodelar och även kvinnan. Arma syndare är en typisk historia från Caldwell där den totala undergången långsamt men oundvikligt kommer närmare för varje sida som vänds. En oslagbar scen i boken är när han ska försöka lura av kollekt från sin fattiga skara av åhörare.
