Mill tillhör utan tvekan en av de stora, hyfsat moderna tänkarna. Att balansen mellan individens frihet och kollektivets bästa är en av de absolut största utmaningarna för våra styrande visar han med stor skicklighet. Han känns verkligen som före sin tid när han tar ställning för kvinnors rätt till lika bestämmande, barns rättigheter och statens/opinionens skyldigheter att tillse dessa, samt inte minst, mot teokratin - dess ondska och hot mot alla former av friheter.

Det intressanta i denna bok görs mer intressant genom den bok som publicerades efter hans död, "Om den sociala friheten", där han själv kritiserar vissa av de slutsatser han kommit fram till i "Om Friheten"!
