Raimundo Silva works as a proofreader in an editorial. While working on a historical text, he decides to place a no instead of a yes. Inadvertently, in altering the text he will never again be a patient and bland man. His act of rebellion leads him to take on the prominent role that, as a man, is his by right. This novel recounts the demolition of the historical wall of Lisbon, and the existence of that other one that makes it impossible for a man to communicate with others, the wall of loneliness and isolation, permanently brought down by a love fulfilled the final wall to be demolished."

Romantisk och poetisk. Saramago behandlar karaktärerna med en fint balanserad ömhet och ärlighet. Jag rekommenderar den varmt.
