James Baldwin har skrivit fantastiska böcker, senare i livet. Denna debut är mest läst och kanske kändast. Jag är dock matad med bibeltyngda ark, och upp till halsmandlarna bräddad, lätt illamående av menlösheter. Trött å människors vägnar att försöka leva upp till påhittade gamla lustlösa sagor, allt medan de förstör verkligheten för sina barn, fruar och män. Denna bok har kvalitéer, men jag mår bara inte bra i den.
