George Eliot was one of the greatest 19th century English novelists. With 'Middlemarch', 'Mill on the Floss', 'Silas Marner' and many other books, she turned the novel away from the narrow path of Dickens and Thackeray into the direction of serious criticism of life and probing analysis of human characters.
