John March is a man whose job has too often interfered with his private life only too often. First when he was a cop his wife was murdered by a serial killer he was investigating when he was a cop. Later after he'd painstakingly pieced together a relationship, the new love of his life, Jane Lu, walked out on him when one of his cases turned nasty.
