This study assesses archaeological, historical, ethnographic and place name evidence for the organisation and perception of deserted medieval settlements and the surrounding landscape on Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor in south-west Britain and on the Romele Ridge in southern Sweden. By widening the perspective in this way the comparative study becomes indirectly a survey of the methodology and theoretical trends of medieval landscape archaeology in Britain and southern Scandinavia. It is argued that the concept of marginality is not inherent in an area but rather imposed on a region from the outside.
