The third volume of M.M. Kaye's engaging memoirs begins when Kaye is a young woman in her 20s. She is en route to China in the spring of 1932 because her beloved father, who has been unfairly dismissed from the British colonial service, wants to retire there. After her father's death, Kaye goes to England where she stumbles into a career writing mysteries and children's books. Royalty payments allow her to return to India where, with World War II beginning, she meets the man of her dreams. As with her earlier volumes, this memoir is filled with amusing anecdotes, marvelous descriptions of the scenery, charming reminiscences and a warmth and humor that makes the reader grateful that Kaye has shared with us the enchanting story of her enchanted life..
