Undermineringen och avhumaniseringen av utsatta, hemlösa personer är upprörande för vår samtid, men under 1920-talet var detta en mer påtaglig och grym verklighet. Med roliga och udda karaktärer, i kombination av hysteriskt roligt, och med allra största sannolikhet, sanna anekdoter, skildras en rättvis och respektfull vy av dessa drabbade utsatta individer. This is, undoubtedly, a fantastically well-crafted book on being down and out on ones luck; destitute to a life of hard work and beggary. It might seem a trivial documentary on being a homeless begger and drifter but it's much more than just that. The dehumanization of paupers is quite mind-boggling for a present developed and intellectual mind, but in the 1920s this was a harsh and true reality. Through funny and whimsical characters in combination with hysterically funny, and most likely true, anectodes, we get a humane face of these unfortunate people down on their luck. From being a dishwasher in Hotel X. in Paris to a tramp in many of London spikes, Orwell takes the reader on a journey to the darkest and uggliest corners of human poverty and gives reality an honest face. Orwell brings solid arguments, to support his claim, for better conditions for the lower class in society and at the same time finding a voice as one of the best writers of all time. This book gives a voice for people being down and out, for poverty is still a known fact.
