Till skillnad från Hodgsons bästa verk känns Carnackinovellerna slarviga och ofullgångna, utan tvekan skrivna för brödfödan. Kombinationen av Holmesliknande detektiv och övernaturlig skräck är dock kul, och stämningen överträffar oftast berättelsen.
