Set one year after the events of THE ALIENIST, a crime novel based in New York during the 1890s. The daughter of a Spanish diplomat is kidnapped, apparently by the young child's nurse. An investigation reveals that the woman either has connections to a criminal gang, or is psychologically disturbed, and both alternatives have awful implications.
