Europeans are slowly beginning to realize how serious a threat the Sicilian Mafia is. This book gives a detailed picture of how the Mafia has spread throughout Europe, and taps recent disclosures through a string of informers to give an insight into the workings of the Mafia. At the same time a spate of investigations in several European countries has thrown up evidence showing the Sicilian Mafia is more deeply entrenched than commonly thought. Worries that the Mafia would exploit moves towards European unity have proved well-founded, while outside the European Community, it is exploiting the turmoil in Eastern Europe after the collapse of communist regimes and is taking advantage of the civil war in former Yugoslavia. The book argues that no democratic government can be expected to defeat the mafia.
